The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER) is pleased to provide the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) to the research community!

The E3SM project began in 2014 with the goal of developing a new model, starting from the outstanding Community Earth System Model (CESM). The new E3SM model was to prioritize high-resolution, high-performance computing and science needed for energy planning. Spread across the DOE laboratory complex, the project is now well on its way to achieving its goals.

E3SM will undergo its Phase Two review in May 2018. With the release of E3SM version 1, the project will convert to an “open development” project, launch a new website (https://e3sm.org), and provide this first issue of the quarterly E3SM Floating Points newsletter.
