Recent DOE Announcements and Funding Awards
Over the past couple of months the Department of Energy (DOE) has announced several funding awards including:
- Department of Energy Awards 22 Million Node-Hours of Computing Time to Support Cutting-Edge Research (July 1, 2021) – E3SM-related research projects involving Walter Hannah (LLNL), Forrest Hoffman (ORNL), Ben Kirtman (University of Miami – RSMAS), and Po-Lun Ma (PNNL) are some of the projects that received computing hours under this award.
- DOE Invests $13 Million in Research on Adapting Scientific Software to Run on Next-Generation Supercomputers (July 21, 2021)
- DOE Announces $11 Million to Study Critical Ecosystems and Improve Climate and Earth System Modeling (July 22, 2021)

- Department of Energy Announces $15.1 Million for Integrated Computational and Data Infrastructure for Science Research (August 5, 2021) – E3SM’s Chief Scientist Ruby Leung (PNNL) is part of the group that received an award to address mitigation strategies for gulf coastal flooding events due to extreme weather with artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) techniques that combine experimental data with computer simulations.
- DOE Announces $37 Million to Small Businesses for Climate, Energy and Scientific R&D (August 9, 2021)
- DOE Office of Science to Support 148 Outstanding University and Community College Students (August 12, 2021)
DOE also announced that the 2021 Ernest Orlando Lawrence Award Call for Nominations deadline has been extended to Tuesday, September 21, 2021 and the Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program is now accepting applications for the 2021 Solicitation 2 cycle with applications due 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday, November 10, 2021.
