E3SM is a state-of-the-art fully coupled model of the Earth’s climate including important biogeochemical and cryospheric processes. It consists of several component models, as shown in Fig 1. that can be configured in many different ways. The model’s most current version is v3.0.

The E3SM model can be configured in many different ways, however only the “scientifically validated configuration” are thoroughly analyzed and evaluated, they are supported and guaranteed to run on NERSC machines and the data from those simulations are released and published to ESG.
