The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science, the largest federal sponsor of basic research in the physical sciences, is committed to ensuring equity and inclusiveness throughout its enterprise. To enforce it, it has recently (Oct, 2022) issued a Statement of Commitment to fostering safe, diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible work, research, and funding environments that value mutual respect and personal integrity. The Office of Science is committing to promote people of all backgrounds, including individuals from groups and communities historically marginalized and underrepresented in STEM fields and careers (Fig. 1, 2).

Beginning in FY 2023, all DOE Office of Science Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs), DOE National Lab Announcements and other funding solicitations will require applicants to submit a Promoting Inclusive and Equitable Research (PIER) Plans as an appendix to their proposal narrative.
