DOE’s RENEW Initiative
The DOE Office of Science (SC) issued a new initiative called Reaching a New Energy Sciences Workforce (RENEW). RENEW aims to provide undergraduate and graduate training opportunities for students and academic institutions not currently well represented in the U.S. science and technology (S&T) ecosystem. The hands-on experiences gained through RENEW are expected to open new career avenues for participants, forming a nucleus for a future pool of talented young scientists, engineers, and technicians with the critical skills and expertise needed for the full breadth of SC research activities.
For Fiscal Year 2023, RENEW is expanding to encompass the broader BER portfolio including Scientific Focus Areas (SFAs) from both EESSD and Biological Systems Science Division (BSSD), Next-Generation Ecosystem Experiments (NGEEs), and Bioenergy Research Centers (BRCs). Applicants are requested to submit proposals that will develop biological and environmental science training capacity and research at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and non-R1 Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs); and foster sustained undergraduate and/or graduate student training, mentoring, and participation in BER-relevant research through new partnerships with the BER-supported SFAs, NGEEs, and BRCs.
More information on institution designations/classifications is available from DOE’s Office of Science.
