Leadership Transitions within E3SM HES Group

The E3SM project is sad to announce that Dr. Kate Calvin (PNNL, Fig. 1), Deputy Lead of the Human-Earth System Feedbacks (HES) Group, left the project at the end of July 2026. Throughout the years, Kate’s leadership has been instrumental in driving the project’s research on the complex interactions between human activities and Earth system processes, aligning the work with the Department of Energy’s mission for energy resilience. Her vision and expertise have left a lasting impact on the project’s direction and contributions. The E3SM team extends its heartfelt gratitude to Kate for her exceptional dedication and wishes her continued success in her future endeavors.

To support the HES Group, Dr. Allan Di Vittorio (LBNL, Fig. 2) will step into the role of Deputy Lead. Allan is a Research Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory with extensive experience in land-use modeling, ecosystem dynamics, and the integration of human systems into Earth system models. Allan’s expertise and collaborative approach will ensure the group continues to advance its mission of understanding the critical feedbacks between human and natural systems and help the group transition into the stronger energy-relevant focus.
