Collaboration Request

E3SM Phase 2 & 3 Collaboration Policy

In April 2018, the E3SM model source code became ‘open development’ and is now freely available to everyone. This includes developmental code as well as versioned released code.

Standard code support is provided for the configurations that were used in the E3SM major simulation campaigns for which the data were already released to the public. The code support guarantees that the model will run on all the E3SM-supported machines in DOE Supercomputing centers.

Currently, (as of April 2024), the E3SM versions v1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 2.0, and 2.1 are supported for the model configurations that were used in the E3SM simulation campaigns.

Data from all major campaign simulations are made publicly available through ESGF archives. There is a few months’ delay between the production of the data and its publication to ESGF to give the E3SM scientists a chance to publish an overview paper on the data. See Released E3SM Data for the current status of data availability.

Collaboration agreements are needed for projects requesting access to E3SM data before its general release. The agreements facilitate the coordination of science and appropriate co-authorship of resulting publications.

Collaboration Request Template

The collaboration request should include

  • Who is the primary E3SM collaborator?
  • Briefly describe, funding source, science plan, project, and the role of E3SM
  • Specify the data requested or any other special needs
  • List expected publications, dates and proposed list of authors, including additional E3SM collaborators
  • List of names/emails of those requesting access

Requesting Collaboration and Approval Process

External projects like ecosystem projects, SFA’s that use E3SM data or code, or other collaborators are expected to submit a collaboration request by email to the E3SM Executive Committee (EC) (e3sm-exec@llnl.gov). The EC will review the proposed agreement and may suggest changes. Once approved by the EC, the agreement will be submitted to the E3SM Council for concurrence. Possible outcomes are rejection, suggestions for further changes, or approval. The EC will inform the requestor of the outcome typically within  2 weeks of EC submission to the Council.
