  • As the E3SM is gaining recognition, it also gains a growing community of external users that work with E3SM data or the aspects of the E3SM model. Recently, several new projects were funded by the U.S. Department of Energy with the aim to improve E3SM (see the ESM Funding Awards post).

To support such projects, E3SM is offering a series of prerecorded online E3SM training sessions that are designed for new E3SM collaborative projects and for new users.

This is a second series of such tutorials and it is tailored towards users who work with E3SM data. The series strives to get users started quickly with hands-on how-to information for working with the E3SM output. The tutorials are easy to follow, and each includes a video recording that is posted on the E3SM YouTube Channel. The videos are accompanied by online page or a presentation with commands that a user can cut and paste into their own command line terminal when following a tutorial.

    Second Round of Video Tutorials

The following tutorials are now available:

    1. Regridding native E3SM model output from various component native grids to any regular grid. Three tutorials are provided:
      • How to regrid cube sphere E3SM atmosphere model output to regular longitude-latitude (log-lat) grid data
      • How to regrid cube sphere E3SM land model output to regular lon-lat grid data using sub-grid scale regridding, taking into account land fraction around coastal areas
      • How to regrid E3SM’s Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS) ocean and sea-ice unstructured Voronoi grid data to regular lon-lat grid data.
    2. How-to run MPAS-Analysis to diagnose and evaluate the E3SM ocean and sea-ice data.
    3. Using the E3SM Diagnostics Package (E3SM-Diags) to analyze E3SM coupled model output.
    4. Using Zstash to archive/extract data to/from the High Performance Storage System (HPSS) long-term storage for E3SM.
    5. How to create variable-resolution global meshes for the MPAS used in E3SM’s ocean, sea-ice and land-ice model components.

    First Round of Video Tutorials

The first online video tutorials released in 2018 included:

    1. An E3SM quick start guide to get, set up and run the E3SM v1 model at National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC)
    2. A tutorial on the E3SM model output and how to get it from the Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF).
    3. A quick start guide to using evaluation and diagnostic tools for the E3SM model.

The tutorials are available on E3SM Tutorials page.
