Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) Experimental Design. Eyring et al., CMIP6 Experimental Design and Organization, GMD, 2016, doi: 10.5194/gmd-9-1937-2016

The E3SM version 1 water cycle simulation campaign’s standard set of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) Diagnosis, Evaluation, and Characterization of Klima (DECK) simulations are now available in CMIP6 format in the Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) distributed and federated archives.

The E3SM team is actively publishing the DECK data to the CMIP6 archives. All atmospheric variables have already been published and are available to download. The land, ocean and sea ice data is continuously being processed and is published as soon as CMORized data – data in CMIP specific format – is produced.

The available DECK data include a long preindustrial control run, historical simulations, idealized COforcing simulations as well as the atmosphere only (AMIP) simulations at standard model resolution (approximately 1 degree latitude by 1 degree longitude).

The recently published Coupled E3SM v1 Model Overview Paper documents the E3SM model version 1.0, its almost 3000 years of DECK simulations, and discusses the model’s performance. In addition to the overview paper, the Status of the v1 Water Cycle Campaign page shows a graphic describing the different DECK simulations and their initialization strategy.

    CMIP6 Data in ESGF

The E3SM CMIP6 DECK datasets include the following experiments

E3SM team participates in the CMIP6 intercomparison with a subset of variables. This data needs to be postprocessed and formatted in a very specific CMIP6 format before being published to the CMIP6 archives. More complete E3SM datasets can be obtained from two different sources:

    1. E3SM project space on the Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) archives:
      • native output data files (many variables, one timestamp per file)
      • regridded to lat-lon grid output files (many variables, one timestamp per file)
      • monthly and seasonal climatologies
      • time series of several important variables
    2. NERSC HPSS storage:
      • tarred big files stored on HPSS tape system at NERSC
